ITALIANI vs FRANCESI - AMICI, NEMICI? Italians vs French - are they friends or enemies?

Davvero italiani e francesi si odiano? Diciamo che gli italiani e i francesi sono come fratelli, si vogliono bene ma ogni tanto ci scappa lo sputo in faccia. E se proprio proprio ogni tanto si odiano, certamente non si odiano come odiano i tedeschi. Ma lasciano un attimo perdere i tedeschi.

Do Italians and French really hate each other? Let's put it this way, Italians and French are like brothers. They love each other, but every once in a while spit flies through the air into one's face. And should they sometimes hate each other, they certainly don't hate each other the way they hate the Germans. But let's forget about the Germans for a minute.

Italiani e francesi hanno più cose in comune di quanto loro non pensino. Cominciamo con la lingua. La matrice linguistica latina è la stessa. È vero che anche lo spagnolo è una lingua romanza come l'italiano, e la similarità nella pronuncia può certo portare alla conclusione che italiano e spagnolo siano più simili che italiano e francese. Ma non è cosi. L'italiano e il francese condividono una più ampia varietà lessicale che l'italiano e lo spagnolo. Nonostante la pronuncia sia molto diversa, l'italiano ha una struttura grammaticale molto più simile a quella francese che a quella spagnola. È proprio grazie a questa vicinanza che in generale è molto più semplice per un francofono imparare l'italiano bene piuttosto che per un parlante della lingua spagnola.

Italians and French have more in common than they think, like the language for example. The Latin matrix is the same. It's true that Spanish is a romance language just like Italian, and the similarity in pronunciation can lead one to conclude that Spanish is more similar to Italian than French is. But that is not so. Italian and French share a wider lexical variety than Italian does with Spanish. Despite the pronunciation being completely different, the grammatical structure of Italian is more similar to French than to Spanish. It's exactly thanks to this linguistic proximity that in general it's easier form a Francophone to learn Italian well than it is for a Spanish speaker.

Vi ricordate la finale dei mondiali di calcio del 2006? La finale dei mondiali era Italia-Germania--almeno per gli italiani. Certo, la seminifinale contro i tedeschi è stata la vera finale perché sono stati i tedeschi e non i francesi ad aver insultato, deriso, e preso in giro gli italiani per l'intera durata del mondiale. I tedeschi l'hanno pagata cara, subendo un'umiliazione calcistica che difficilmente dimenticheranno. La finale ufficiale, però, è stata giocata a Berlino tra Italia e Francia. A parte qualche scaramuccia tra fratelli adolescenti e forse uno degli episodi calcistici più disonorevoli--parlo di Zidane, e chi sennò?--la finale è stata una delle partite del secolo. Questo è stato possibile perché italiani e francesi non si odiavano, ma sono stati duri avversari l'uno dell'altro che tuttativa si rispettavano l'un l'altro.

Do you remember the 2006 soccer World Cup final? The final was the Italy-Germany match--at least to the Italians. Yes, to us Italians the semifinal against the Germans was the real final because it was the Germans, not the French, who insulted, derided, and mocked the Italians during the entire World Cup up to their match. The germans paid dearly by suffering a hard-to-forget soccer humiliation. The official final, however, was played in Berlin between France and Italy. Forget about some little teenage friction here and there and arguably one of the most shameful episodes in soccer history--I'm talking about Zidane, who else? That final was one of the matches of the century. This was possible because the Italians and the French didn't hate each other, but fought hard holding one another in respect.

Personalmente non ho mai incontrato un francese che parli male della cucina italiana. Non ho nemmeno mai incontrato un italiano che parli male della cucina francese. Ovviamente parlo della cucina in generale. Sicuramente ci sono dei piatti francesi che a qualche italiano possono far cagare, come ci sono dei piatti italiani che a qualche francese possono far vomitare. Me ne vengono in mente un paio, cosí su due piedi, per entrambe le cucine, ma sarà l'argomento di un prossimo articolo.

I personally never met a Frenchman who disrespected Italian cuisine. I also never met an Italian who disrispected French cuisine. I'm obviously talking about cooking in general. I'm sure there are French recipes that will send some Italians right to the bathroom. In the same way, there are some Italian recipes that will give some French a gag reflex. I can think of a couple right off the top of my head for both cuisines, but I'll hold this for another article.

Dunque a cosa è dovuta questa diceria che italiani e francesi si odiano? Ecco come la penso. Italiani e francesi non si odiano. Italiani e francesi si criticano, è diverso. In particolare, criticano le istituzioni e i governi l'uno dell'altro, e probabilmente i malvezzi l'uno dell'altro. Ma qual è il problema? Se un francese criticasse i nostri governi degli ultimi vent'anni, mi aspetterei di dovergli dare ragione per molte cose. E sono sicuro che anche un francese non avrebbe problemi a darmi ragione se io criticassi--in maniera costruttiva e circonstanziata ovviamente--molte delle loro istituzioni, partendo proprio dai loro governi. Voglio dire, parliamo di un popolo--i francesi--che paralizzano la capitale sei mesi all'anno a suon di scioperi. Da questo punto di vista posso dire che se noi italiani fossimo un po' come i francesi, non avremmo tutti i problemi che abbiamo.

So how does the rumor originate that Italians and French hate each other? Here's my two cents. Italians and French do not hate each other. They surely criticize each other, but that's different. Particularly, they're critical of the governments and institutions of each other's country, possibly including the little bad habits we have. And so what? If a French person were to criticize our administrations of the last twenty years, I'd expect I'd have to concur with him or her. In the same way I'm sure that a French would also admit I'm right if I were to be critical--in a constructive and elaborate manner, that is--towards their institutions, beginning with their government and those who have been running it. I mean, we're talking about a people--the French--who keep their capital paralized six months out of twelve through strikes and protests. From this point of view, I can say that if us Italians were a bit like the French, we wouldn't have all the problems we have.

E così italiani e francesi non sono né nemici né grandi amici. Si vogliono bene e si rispettano, ma a modo loro e a patto che uno non pesti i piedi all'altro. D'altra parte queste sono regole d'oro per mantenere pace e concordia in ogni buon vicinato.

To conclude, Italians and French are neither enemies nor great friends. They love and respect each other, but in their own way and only provided they stay in their turf. On the other hand, these are the golden rules to keep the peace in every good neighborhood.
